Project Description

Healthcare Design – Bent Glass

Counterbalancing negative emotions: The power of architecture and design on the human psyche is reflected strongly in public spaces that wield emotional clout, such as cultural centres, schools, city halls – and hospitals.

Working on two hospital projects, United Hospital Mother Baby, and Mother Mercy Hospital (both in Minnesota), with designer HDR of Hopkins MN, Nathan Allan chose to unite uplifting visual appeal with multi-leveled function. HDR selected Nathan Allan’s unique Mirage textured glass panels for both projects, to create spaces that provide privacy as well as comfort, using color, texture and light.

Glasswork is both organic and sanitary: Mirage textured glass, part of Nathan Allan’s Classic Textures Directional Series, is a free flowing pattern with fluidly shaped lines of deep texture. Organic molds are produced with deep recesses to allow for the profound surface striations. Each mold is individually created to form a continuous pattern from panel to panel.

Use the two most important variables: light distortion and colour, with one medium: Glass

Mirage textured glass creates a safe space, providing the comfort of privacy with the distortion of light, and serving as a solid sound barrier. The glass does not shut in patients, families or healthcare providers; instead, the light and colors that filter through the vibrant panels are effectively uplifting. Mirage glass displays the gentle, soothing aspects of nature; ripples of water and soothing wind…

Don’t forget the creative flair

It’s important that the beauty of Architectural Glass remains for years to come. With Nathan Allan’s Mirage textured glass, surfaces are sealed, creating an anti-microbial glass which is ideal for all Healthcare projects.

The purpose of a space is the driving force behind interior design. With the everyday rhythms and routines of a hospital, it’s important to have a reminder of why it’s there: healing, recovery, and hope. By incorporating hope into interior design with light, movement, and vibrancy, interior design can serve as a reminder of beauty and optimism.
